Data comes not only in different formats but also from different sources. The kind of data shared and stored on the Usenet was typically text, but as usage progressed, the Internet needed to be able to share many different types of files. For example, Amazon needed to show pictures of their products. Pictures are typically in PNG, JPEG, BMP, or GIF format. Music streaming services, such as Napster, emerged. Most files downloaded or shared on Napster were MP3 or WAV files. Sharing movie or video files, which were typically in MP4 or MOV format, over the Internet wasn’t very popular early on because the speed was slow a decade or so ago. People who worked with web‐based applications used HTML, ASPX, PHP, and JS files. And of course, there are the familiar DOC, TXT, PPT, and PDF files. Finally, some of the more popular data formats are JSON, YAML, XML, CSV, and Apache Parquet. Data created from a mobile device might be in image form or even JSON files, which can send location to a consumer on the Internet. Web servers may expose an API, which expects the file format to be in XML, which is common with Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) interfaces. The point is that there are many different types of data being stored and created and many require a different approach for optimally storing and transferring them.
Velocity
The pace at which data is created is increasing at a high rate of speed. As more data streams get created and are connected to the Internet, there will be even a greater rate of data being generated. As mentioned earlier, one reason for this is that most people have a device that is connected to the Internet 24/7 and is likely sending data constantly to a consumer, and that data needs to be stored. Those devices also commonly have a camera, which makes capturing sharable moments simple. From an industry perspective, automobiles, ships, running shoes, brain‐computer interfaces (BCIs), smart watches, and almost any kind of product imaginable will generate and share data. That data will be stored for business intelligence, self‐optimization, and product improvement ideas. This will only become more prevalent with the implementation of 5G, which allows the device to remain permanently connected to the Internet with high connectivity speeds. Healthcare and law enforcement are other industries that are generating a lot of data that can be used to improve treatments for rare illnesses and capture those who break laws. In the last two years, 90 percent of all the data in the world ever created has been generated.
